Patient movement during a CBCT scan does not necessarily mean that the examination must be discarded. Evidence suggests that motion of approximately 3 mm or more can significantly affect diagnostic image quality. Rather than immediately repeating the scan and exposing the patient to additional radiation, advanced reconstruction tools may be used to reduce motion-related artifacts.
One technology designed for this purpose is Patient Motion Correction, or PMC. This algorithm works during image reconstruction by analyzing the raw acquisition data and identifying spatial inconsistencies associated with patient movement during the scan.
