The field of view (FOV) in dental CBCT should be selected according to the specific diagnostic task and the patient’s clinical condition. As a general principle, the smallest FOV that adequately covers the region of interest should be preferred. Depending on the system and acquisition protocol, smaller FOVs can also support higher spatial resolution and more detailed visualization of localized structures.
The selected FOV must still include all anatomical structures required to answer the clinical question. For extensive surgical planning, such as orthognathic surgery, a larger FOV may be necessary to capture the relevant craniofacial structures rather than limiting the examination to the dentition alone.
