Even small patient movements during CBCT acquisition can directly compromise image quality and diagnostic reliability. Scientific studies have reported that more than 80% of CBCT examinations may involve some degree of patient movement of 0.5 mm or greater. When motion occurs, the reconstructed image can show characteristic artifacts such as double contours, blurring, and reduced sharpness between adjacent anatomical structures.
This sensitivity is directly related to how cone beam computed tomography works. CBCT systems acquire multiple radiographic projections sequentially as the unit rotates around the patient. Conventional reconstruction algorithms assume that the patient’s anatomy remains in the same position throughout the acquisition.
