Successful intraoral scanning relies on applying fundamental principles from conventional dentistry to the digital workflow. One of the most important factors is effective moisture control. Saliva, blood, and other oral fluids can interfere with optical capture and compromise the accuracy of the 3D mesh. Proper isolation using suction, air drying, and gauze is therefore essential before and during scanning.
Lighting conditions are another important consideration. Because intraoral scanners use their own light source to capture dental and soft-tissue surfaces, intense operatory lighting or direct natural light may interfere with image acquisition. Depending on the scanner technology, excessive external light can affect color capture and potentially reduce scanning consistency. For this reason, direct light from the dental operating light should generally be minimized or turned off during scanning when recommended by the manufacturer.
